Topic: Websites Requiring Age Verification to Enter

So I've been looking at numerous websites that require that you "18 or older" or "21 or older" to enter and/or use. As for the 18 or older it can be "understood" that the majority of these websites contain pornography and well, that's just about it. This is not the same as a site that just says it is not intended for those under 18 as it does not require age verification or otherwise attempting to bar those under 18 to view or access the content. That can be seen a mere suggestion and not a requirement.

The other sites requiring to be (or at least enter) a date that would make you 21 or older would be sites that are in the business of selling/producing NOT ONLY alcohol but, believe it or not, tobacco products as well!!!

Don't believe me?

Try to go to the website for Marlboro CIGARETTES  and see what happens. They make you not only give your name and age but your address all to access a WEBSITE! And one about tobacco too!! You must be 21 to enter! BAH!

Smoking is a RIGHT granted at 18 years of age NOT 21. My question is why the fucking hell would a company essentially shoot themselves in the foot when there isn't the slightest incentive to? This makes no sense.

Now, I am not much a smoker myself, I've had a pack or two on my life, not a fan. Tobacco products suck. But seriously, what kind of bullshit is this?

"Am I an adult or a minor? Pick one. I'm between the ages of 18-21. There is no grey area. Give me rights or admit your hypocrisy"- me

Phillip Morris, and other tobacco companies, would likely benefit from the smoking age being increased to 21. Smoking in general, and youth smoking in particular, is not all that popular right now. Increasing the age would induce the "forbidden fruit" mentality into a large number of people for whom smoking is now legal. Twenty-year-old smoking would become like 20-year-old drinking. It would be just as widespread; it would just be in the shadows. But Phillip Morris would still make their money.

Actually smoking is a right endowed in you by God at the time of your birth.  A right cannot be given or gained at any time after birth.

Haha, I was trying to look at the website for skoal snus (a smokeless tobacco product, similar to swedish snus being test marketed in the US), and it wanted me to confirm my age by letting them send me a mailer and then inputting the code I recieve.  Fuck that!

Most of these websites anymore are actually the american pages for game websites. Anything related to a product (at least on the page of the publisher) that's listed as "Mature" will generally have that on to avoid liability. I don't believe it's actually a part of any law, but rather an ad hoc measure taken by companies to avoid having to pay attorneys to defend themselves against frivilos lawsuits like the many they have faced in the past, primarily by organized groups founded by parents who blame all of their problems on outside factors rather than taking responsibility for their own actions, or lack there of.

I have honestly never been very interested in the "alcohol, tobacco, etc." part of the movement, because I couldn't care less whether I can drink or smoke or not. Let the politicians have their little game with alcohol while we win the vote.
